2012 The Wanderer Shiraz

the wanderer shirazLast month’s Yarra Valley Wine Program served to highlight what a terrific vintage 2012 was for Shiraz/Syrah and Pinot within the region. There are going to be some excellent wines released and Andrew Marks’ The Wanderer label is one you should keep a very close eye on. On a side note, I was drinking his new Melbourne Gin Company project with tonic earlier this week and it’s an absolute belter. Much like this wine. Multi-talented man.

Opens with reductive notes which Andrew says appeared post bottling. I actually quite like them but they blew off over the three days of tasting. Smells and tastes of sausages, bacon, black cherries and mulberries. It’s laden with myriad spices and clear notes of white pepper. So complex, so much to contemplate. Sessionable and medium-bodied but has depth of flavour. Tactile tannin and poised acidity. Sophisticated, handsome and seductive. A class above. 95
