2011 TarraWarra K-Block Merlot

imageI was in a car driving past this vineyard, opposite the little valley that holds Giant Steps’ Tarraford vineyard, less than a month ago. No one much really likes to talk about Merlot in Australia but I enjoyed the glimpse as I believe TarraWarra make one of the best in the country.

This isn’t the greatest ever release of the K-block but I still think it’s an impressive one, especially given the challenges the year presented. Red fruits and plums, earth, kalamata olives and meat jus. Pepper spice. Savoury with a lovely set of tannins. Only medium-bodied but tastes good. 90

Region: Yarra Valley
Alcohol: 13.0%
Closure: Screwcap
Price: $35

Swirling in my glass right now- it’s a bloody cracker.
What Merlot is all about. Puts paid to the false “sweet merlot” crowd.
    Lovely stuff!

  2. Exactly. Serious Merlot. If you manage to track down a 2010 give it a go but I have high hopes for the 2012 as well – it’s a ways off release though.
