2011 TarraWarra J-Block Shiraz

I love the taste of this, I love how it feels, I love the medium-bodied sessionability. It’s aromatic, vinous and spicy. The addition of 2% Roussanne works a treat. I’d drink this any day of the week yet it’s only going to scrape in for a bronze medal. Criteria based scoring means that it loses out on ‘depth’ and ‘length’. Whose criteria are they anyway? Did Moses come down from the mountain with stone tablets while I was studying films, playing music and reading books (there’s no real criteria with which to assess any of those aesthetic forms)? I’d ignore my score and go on the note…

Vigorous almost cola-like acidity holds the fort with the most subtle and fine tannin apparent only at the very end of the back-palate. There’s a slipperiness to the midsection which contributes to the attractive sense of flow. Cherries and purple fruits, pepper and peat. A lovely, characterful bistro wine. 88
