Generally I think you’re best off buying your SC Pannell Grenache and whacking it straight in the cellar for at least five years but the cooler 2011 conditions have given us a wine that can be enjoyed a little earlier. Sourced from 69 year-old vines and matured in 500 litre old French puncheons so the oak influence is minimal. A good thing when it comes to Grenache.
It’s savoury, earthen and spicy with autumnal characters. Red cherry-berry fruits, plenty of dried herbs and the palate is lit up by pepper. A touch of savoury beefiness is the perfect segue way to masculine tannins. It has line and length working in its favour. I wouldn’t say it’s a great release of the wine but it still demands respect. 93
