I’m all for Australian producers exploring styles of Rosé that diverge from the pale Provence model that is the poster boy for the movement. And I’m a usually a fan of the work of Domenic Torzi and Tracy Matthews. But I just didn’t enjoy this wine that much. It’s 100% Sangiovese and sees six months in French oak.
It smells of cherries and boiled strawberry lollies. There’s an impression of sweetness on both the nose and palate. At least medium-bodied with suggestions of molasses, pepper and baking spices. It has an appreciable body and feels a little cumbersome and sticky. I don’t get an impression of flow – much like my opening paragraph, it begins too many sentences with conjunctions. To me this is approaching dry red territory, albeit a dry red you can chill. It is quirky and others may find a degree of charm that eludes me. 87
