Kate Goodman is doing some really smart things over at Punt Road in the Yarra Valley. The higher tiered ‘Chemin’ range can be superb but this effort, sourced from the Napoleone Vineyard in Coldstream is bang on as well. Don’t let the alcohol reading fool you into thinking it lacks flavour.
A thin veil of smoke covers the lemon, wheat germ and white peach with French oak (25% new) adding a kiss of nougat and some woodspice. It’s a nutty wine with adroit use of lees. Roasted hazelnuts to the fore. Has an almost whey-like texture and good extension through a slightly briney finish. Offers both compelling drinking and value. Neither underdone or overdone. Just right. 92
