The Calgardup Brook vineyard lies in the south of the Margaret River region. In 2011 it’s given us a Chardonnay of regional intensity and power within a framework of stony acidity and cinnamon spiced oak. The fullness of flavour apparent on entry is quickly siphoned into a flexible yet strong line.
Tropical flickers make themselves known amongst white peach and ruby grapefruit. The texture is the highlight though; almond and oatmeal, beeswax, pastry and minerality in almost equal measures with the back-end intriguingly taut and refreshing. Quite stunning with loads of personality…yet I doubt it will clash with many individual palates. I lapped it up with glee. 95

Margaret River St Aubin… your note compels me to try this, Jeremy. Do you prefer this style or something like the Fraser Gallop Parterre 2012?
Cheers

GP – I drink the Fraser Gallop style more often but it’s still difficult to call it a preference. I love Chardonnays like this too much. I’ll get a review of the 2011 McHenry Hohnen Rocky Road Chardonnay up today. It’s more of a line and length model, less about layers more about purity. I’d happily drink it any day of the week. I’m enamoured with the single site expression of these three 2011 McHenry Hohnen Chardonnays. It’s just so enjoyable to have the opportunity to drink the differences.
