2012 Jacob’s Creek Reserve Barossa Riesling

JC-Wines-big-r-g_0058_REGIONAL-RESERVE-ROWexceptAUST_rieslingI spoke to Jacob’s Creek chief winemaker Bernard Hicken earlier this year about this wine and others in the regionally themed Jacob’s Creek Reserve range. It’s mostly Eden Valley fruit but as they’re dealing with an international market who possess a limited understanding of Australian wine regions they’ve opted to go with Barossa on the label. It makes sense. Small steps are still needed overseas, especially when it comes to big brands.

Smells of ripe limes, talc, red and green apples and white flowers. Super juicy, soft acidity and a bit of flesh to sink your teeth into. It’s not an austere Riesling. There’s a touch of sweetness about it – I won’t speculate as to whether that’s just fruit sweetness or some residual sugar at play. Not an off-dry expression in any case. Good if not outstanding structure and length without being particularly piercing or intense. 91
