2011 Ridgemill Estate Chardonnay

ridgemill chardonnayI was going to wait until I’d looked at this on the second day before I reviewed it but hey, I’ve tasted it three times; once on release, once in a blind bracket of Chardonnays at a Sommeliers Australia tasting (where it gained favour amongst many in attendance) and now again over about three hours…so I think I have its measure.

Fine acidity with no malolactic static that I can detect. The texture comes from lees and oak. Complexing sulphides which don’t hog the limelight. Has some savoury, bready qualities. Purity of grapefruit is at the centre of the wine. There’s a gentle lisp of pear and a mere hint of sour lime (it’s a positive, think Chablis). Really impressive focus. Quite linear. The oak is a touch firm on the back-palate but it’s settling in as I type and there’s more than enough fruit, length and structure to suggest that it will mesh over the next few years. Admirable winemaking from Peter McGlashan. 92
