2011 Domaine Marcel Deiss Berckem

berckemKindly sent with a bottle of the less expensive Domaine Marcel Deiss Alsace 2011 which was unfortunately corked. A blend of thirteen grapes from one village in Alsace – Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat amongst them. 14.1g/l residual sugar. Importer: Terroir Selections

Stewed pears and apples, citrus, lychees, roses and quince with impressive mineral presence. Has a honeyed viscosity but doesn’t feel blousy. Acid and sugar in good balance. It’s spicy with white pepper and pickled ginger. The finish introduces some orange rind which provides a welcome counterpoint to a certain grapey-ness that I see in a lot of Alsation white blends. I couldn’t drink a lot of it but I do like and admire it. 91
