Tannat’s home is in the south-west of France and to a lesser extent Uruguay. It’s a variety that’s big on structure. Lots of acid and lots of tannin. This example from the Hunter is no exception.
Plenty of rusticity on the nose. Earth, leather, stables etcetera. Dark chocolate too. That (dare I say) ‘European’ dimension is there on the palate as well. Spiced plums and mulberry fruit flavours are present but I don’t think they quite match the sprawling acidity and vice-like phenolics. At least not yet. It still feels skeletal at four years of age. Maybe that will change with age. It’s an interesting wine but ultimately I’m not convinced. 87+ Average – Good
