This is the first release of the Mayer Yarra Valley Syrah, a more refined expression of the variety than the Big Betty Shiraz. It incorporates 50% whole bunches and sees only old oak.
A stalky nose with vivid lavender and violet notes. Vegetal nuances, pastrami, mulberry and blackberry with complex spice; cardamom the easiest to pick out. The palate is all form and structure on the first day, lithe and continually wrapping itself around its own body like an eel on a fishing line…or Iggy Pop on a festival stage. The fruit is punchy but bound up, requiring plenty of air to express itself. Uncompromising but captivating. Should reveal more in five to ten years. 93+ Very Good
