2012 Barwang Tumbarumba Chardonnay

barwang chardThere aren’t any great thrills offered by this Barwang Chardonnay – you’ll have to trade up to the “842″ version for that – but it’s well made and comforting in its own way.

Aromas of lemon barley, white peach, melon and fig. Plenty of flavour and good flow. It sees 15% new French oak, imparting a nougat kiss and a little texture. Very much in the background though. There are a few curves in the mix and a surprising green apple aspect to the finish. Pleasing persistence as well. 90 Good

  1. Alex says:

You can pick this up a lot cheaper than $21 at a certain large national wine retailer (something insane like $12-13 when you buy 6 or more) and I think at those lower prices it absolutely over delivers. I haven’t tried the 842 – it’d be interesting to see them side by side … Would you say that for the average drinker the extra money is worth it?

  2. Spot on Alex. It’s available for much less than RRP. And at $12-13 it’s a very easy recommendation. The “864″ can be found for a good price too and it really is a step up, but I guess it depends on whether you want more than this…or perhaps the occasion. I think this is a terrific wine for the price but the extra dollars are justified for the 2010 “864″ if you’re willing to pay them.
