2012 clos Clare Watervale Riesling

The cat’s already out of the bag. The 2012 vintage in the Clare Valley is looking terrific when it comes to Riesling. Sam and Tom Barry must be proud of this exciting little number sourced from the south-west corner of the famous Florita Vineyard. Textural with pinpoint acidity tucked in nicely but providing great shape and mineral drive. It flows beautifully as the finish shoots off into the horizon.

The nose is full of floral notes, limes, green apples and bath-salts. There’s generosity and accessibility (as befits the best Watervale expressions of the variety) but no lack of poise or finesse. A hint of fennel sets off the other flavours. Delicious now, long life ahead. 94 Excellent

Agree – in a recent tasting i thought this performed better than the 2012 grosset watervale riesling. And i believe it has a long life ahead of it even though it is so fresh and pure fruited already.

  2. Sam Barry says:

Hi Cailles, Glad that you enjoyed it. The great thing about the 2012′s is that they are quiet generous and juicy as young wines but will age exeptionally well due to the great balance and natural acidity.
