“It must be said
It’s not a fable
You can’t please everybody
Even if you’re able
It must be said
That I’m not stable with you” – Ed Kuepper, Serene Machine
I reckon it’s fair to say that New Zealand have a better track record than Australia when it comes to ‘medium sweet’ Rieslings. Someone will probably argue with me though. Which brings me to this wine (40g/l rs). WineState magazine gave it four stars according to Cracka Wines, although the Giesen website only lists the 2010 as achieving that rating. God only knows who was on the judging panel either day, but it’s not going to break bronze on WWEI. Having said that, it won’t be ‘Breaking Bad’ either…
Decent aromas; lime sherbet, quince paste, honey and turkish delight. Problem is, it becomes saccharine on the mid-palate and goes walk about from there. Any tension only lasts a millisecond. In short, it lacks conviction. In terms of generic medium sweet wines, it’s fine and many punters will lap it up. But that’s as far as it goes. 85 Average
