2010 Esperanza Monastrell

So this is what the guys and girls at Wirra Wirra get up to in their ‘down-time’? The fruit is sourced from David Paxton’s Mataro block in McLaren Vale.

Not much in the way of reduction here; it’s mostly about plums and sweet berried fruit but there’s some savoury, slightly ferrous action near the end; grilled meats and such. Earthen edges too. Lively yet integrated acidity and assertive yet supple tannin. Pepper and clove spice add further interest. Does seem more Monastrell than Mataro in style, if that makes sense. Less intimidating to first timers than a typical Mourvèdre/Mataro I suspect. 91 Good – Very Good
