2008 Pizzini Il Barone

I’m pretty sure that 2008 was a warmer vintage than 2006 in the King Valley. It seems to show in this wine with some confected notes on display. There’s still plenty of delicious, savoury charm though. A few more years in a cool, dark place will help immensely too.

A blend of 40% Cabernet, 30% Shiraz with the rest Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. Macerated red and dark cherries, plums, eucalypt, earth, fennel and tobacco. Plenty of interest, that’s for sure. I don’t mind the prominent minty character in these Il Barones – it doesn’t seem to detract from the other flavours; rather it provides some refreshing lift. Tannins, as always, are grippy and assertive. Acidity is bright but integrated. All in all, another succesful example of this highly individual blend from Pizzini. Very Good
