2010 Quartz Hill Syrah

There’s some good gear being cranked out in the Pyrenees at the moment. Mitchell Harris, Mount Avoca, Pyren Vineyard and now these guys at Quartz Hill. The winemaker is Darrin Gaffy, the grapes are hand-picked, the ferments are hand plunged and the whilst not certified, the vineyard is managed following biodynamic principles. All of which suggests a lot of care and attention.

It took a bit of time to coax this out of its shell and it was at its best on the second day of tasting but I was immediately impressed. Opens up all serious and stony with blackberry and slate, iron and brazil nuts. Eventually it sings with the addition of cherries, florals, mint and mild spice. Heads in a red fruited direction over time. The tannins are gloriously textured – one of the most impressive aspects of the wine, along with the length and composure. Needs a stint in the cellar or a lengthy decant to get the most out of it. Very Good – Excellent
