2010 Ben Haines Roussanne

Like Sisyphus, and Ben Haines himself, I keep pushing Roussanne, but it’s an uphill battle…until you get into people’s mouths. Rick Kinzbrunner has given up and his Giaconda Aeolia Roussanne isn’t being made anymore. Those vines will be devoted to Chardonnay from here on in. And I was sad to read that the vines that produced this made way for more Shiraz. It’s sourced from Central Victoria – the Nagambie Lakes wine region I would guess.

Nuts and white flowers first and foremost with an array of zesty citrus, some apricot kernels, nori and bee’s wax. It’s a leaner style in its youth but the subtle yet crucial textural nuance will bloom in time. Balanced and savoury with a clove spiced back palate that works a treat. Maybe even a touch of phenolic bite. Very Good – Excellent

Hold the Press: This improved even further after I’d initially published my review, so I’ve upgraded the rating. Whack it in a cellar for ten years and watch it bloom.

Beautiful. Yet sad as yet another realisation that what is really good for people is undervalued :)

Keep flying the textural flag good Sir!

  2. Thank you Stu, and spot on. I shall carry the textural flag with me wherever I may go :)

  3. I’ve belatedly bumped up the rating from Good – Very Good to where it sits now. The wine came together on the second night, more interesting texturally and aromatically. Bodes well for its future. Wine is a moving target…
