2009 d’Arenberg d’Arry’s Original Shiraz Grenache

I review a lot of wine from the Yarra Valley, the Mornington Peninsula, McLaren Vale and the Grampians. I don’t always get to choose what I get sent – a first world problem for sure, and not a bad one to have - but I’m working on covering more regions more thoroughly via email requests. One can but ask…in the meantime, here’s another Grenache based (well, it’s 41% Grenache) wine from the Vale. I bought this. I’m still trying to get onto d’Arenberg’s media list – I may be on it now but they haven’t asked for my delivery address yet.

This is an honest to good wine for a fair price. More black than red fruited, pleasantly rustic, a little rough and disjointed yet oddly satisfying. It’s the sort of wine that has you beginning to believe Max Allen’s spiel on vinous space in society…then you sober up.

There’s sweeter cookie elements, licorice, earth and iron in there too. Bucolic tannins are as they should be. Wish the acid wasn’t so damn spiky but I reckon this is a worthwhile purchase. Average – Good
