David Bowley sent out his two 2011 Vinteloper Rieslings (each made from exactly the same material) under the banner of ‘Art vs Science’. This offering represents the latter, with the wine made “by the book, using the tools of my education”. It experienced inoculation via a known yeast, cold settling, controlled temperature fermentation, stabilisation and filtration.
The results are, as you would expect, quite traditional…but impressive nonetheless. It smells of lavender, jasmine, orange blossom, limes and lemons. Scintillating acidity and minerality carry the palate. It’s driven and linear but not monotonously austere. Pith and starfruit emerge on the back palate. Excellent extension. Real cellaring potential. Very Good
