In so many ways this is the Shiraz I was hoping Mike Press would make. Noticeably reduced oak input, oodles of cool climate spice, as much emphasis on structure as generosity of flavour. It’s just a touch too awkward at this stage for me to be definitive in my praise.
There’s a freshness to the berry flavour which allows the riper plum characters to impart some power without tipping the wine over the edge. Wood bestows a sweet choc/vanilla kiss on a finish which is packed with pepper, brown spice and soft, ripe tannin.
It’s mostly elbows and knees for now – the frame sits outside of the flavours but I’d say it will come together with more bottle age. Still offers impressive value for money. Good
