There appear to be a growing number of producers exploring more medium bodied expressions of Barossa Valley Shiraz and it’s something I’m all for. I guess the question I have is whether or not consumers will be able to put aside their preconceptions and open themselves up to the new pleasures that are available under the ‘Barossa’ label. I hope so.
Richard Bate has been chipping away at this style over the last two vintages with his ‘The Chatterbox’ Shiraz. Quite successfully I might add. This one smells of red fruits and fresh plum with subtle hints of earth, violets, cinnamon, tree bark and tonka bean. Vivacious on entry before well pitched French oak adds a welcome savoury, textural dimension. Fine, gummy tannin works well.
Finesse over brute strength. Very Good
