Better

My hiatus afforded me time to contemplate the shortcomings of my writing; and tasting notes in general. As much we might try to evoke a wine, to textualise it and ultimately to capture it, our efforts are always already in vain. It is the nature of representation to draw attention not only to the object in question but also to the absence of that object, a loss which forms the basis of our need to describe.

In the face of this necessary failure I find some comfort in the work of Leonard Cohen.

better than poetry
is my poetry
which refers
to everything
that is beautiful and
dignified, but is
neither of these itself

And this is, perhaps, a thought worth sustaining as our words continue to fall short of the contents of the glass in front of us.

And take some comfort that our words are often much better than what’s in the half-full glass too :) Good to see you are back Love Chumps.

Welcome back. The new subtitle does raise the question though, what about dessert?

Indeed Jeremy, great to see you back on deck.

I know this wine thing is getting too weird when I look at the Leonard book cover that illustrates this post and see a wine label.

Maybe I need a hiatus too.

Thanks all. Hopefully the main course will be satisfying enough so as not to require a dessert :)

  5. GW says:

No need for sugar coating, like so many others either.

A big welcome back Jeremy :) I enjoyed the entree muchly and now look forward to indulging in what will hopefully be a very slow, long main course….

p.s. just curious, is WordPress really that much better to use?

  7. Jeremy Pringle says:

Cheers Chris. I’ve hardly scratched the surface of WordPress but it seems to offer a lot more flexibility and a much better user interface than the old Google platform. So far, so good.
