There seems to have been a welcome resurgence of interest in the Pyrenees lately, with a number of smaller, artisanal producers crafting wines of great merit and real interest. These new releases from Mount Avoca are amongst the best I have tasted from the impressive 2009 vintage.
2009 Mount Avoca Shiraz
13.5% Screwcap $27
Savoury and smoky with blue and purple berries, anise, spice and florals. I’m not sure of the percentage of Viognier in the mix but it’s been used to great effect, adding a an extra dimension to a compelling texture. Toasty, charcoal notes back the wine up and the finish is minerally and long. Thoroughly enjoyable now but has the potential to improve with bottle age. Excellent
2009 Mount Avoca Cabernet Sauvignon
13.5% Screwcap $27
The value is off the charts here. Cassis and gum leaf shot with raspberries. Cedar, malt chocolate and tobacco leaf underneath. Medium bodied and elegant but not at all lacking in flavour. Tempered acidity keeps the wine in shape as it glides towards a satisfying, gravelly conclusion. Give it at least another eight years and it should really blossom. Excellent

Thanks very much for the kind words on the Mount Avoca wines Jeremy. Whilst I am delighted with the feedback I am disappointed that they are your last under the WWEI banner that I've enjoyed immensely since discovering your blog 18 months or so ago. Hope to see you pop elsewhere soon.
Cheers & best wishes,
-Johnno
Thanks Johnno.
These two are knockout wines full stop but when you factor in the price it just makes for a rosier picture.
cheers,

Hi Jeremy,
I’d love to see reviews of some of the latest Mount Avoca offerings. Do the wineries send you wines to taste, or do you source them yourself?
Thanks.
Emmi – unfortunately I haven’t received any wines from Mount Avoca recently but I’ll get in touch with them and see what I can do.
Cheers
J
