McLaren Vale 14.5% Screwcap $16
I’ve heard good things about the 2010 vintage in McLaren Vale but this is the first red wine I’ve tasted from it. Joy of joys, it lived up to my very high expectations. This is stonkingly good McLaren Vale Shiraz at an outrageously low price.
Chocolate dusted blueberries merge with violets, dark plum, anise, coffee, toasted spice and roast meats. The depth is apparent on the nose and mirrored on the palate. Lovely, vital fruit in a wine that is really not much more than medium bodied. Having said that, it lacks nothing in terms of regional richness…it’s just more lightly framed and so very enjoyable to drink (lots of).
Every sweet twist is met by a savoury turn and a noticable but not distracting salinity just adds to the complexity. Drinkability, interest, poise and a bit of X factor – all for $16? Wow. Chapel Hill are on fire.
