2009 Tyrrell’s Single Vineyard Stevens Shiraz

Hunter Valley 13.0% Screwcap $41

Made in what strikes me as the classical Hunter style of Shiraz; acid structure, low oak input and only just medium bodied. It’s a style I enjoy even more as I get older. It will probably age better than me too.

A nose of dense black cherry with flickers of berry fruit and baking spice, a hint of cola and dried herbs. Some pitch as well. Savoury and linear with the finest of drying tannin. This isn’t about complexity of flavour. It’s about form and flow. A totally seamless and unbroken line rolls out, finishing on an aniseed note. You should be able to find it at retail for around $30 and at that price it is very good value.

It tastes black and red…like sucking on an Essendon jersey. And isn’t that team on a roll this year?
