2009 Devil’s Lair Chardonnay

Margaret River 13.0% Screwcap $45

Texture, texture, texture. It’s the most important feature of this wine, even though there is great complexity of flavour. An appealing roundness in the mouth without sacrificing a backbone….sort of like a circle with a line struck through it – “Ø”

Grapefruit, lemons and lemon youghurt, white flowers and stone fruit along with a little savoury bread are present on the nose. That savouriness extends onto a well constructed palate that is full of lees action and captivating citrus flavour edged with pear and white peach. It’s not overtly fruity but it does sidle up to a high note of burnt fig.

Oak and fruit are in rhythm. A very pleasing Chardonnay that’s got a lot of objective quality going for it as well as appeasing my personal tastes. It will only improve with some age.
