2008 Mitchell Harris Shiraz

Pyrenees 13.5% Screwcap $30

I’ve recently tasted a couple of Pyrenees reds that didn’t escape 2008′s burst of March heat unscathed. This wine, on the other hand, has come out looking pretty damn good. The Shiraz was co-fermented with 3% Viognier and it’s pretty much impossible to miss as soon as you pour a glass. Heady aromatics of black and sweet spice, florals, dark purple fruit and apricot (which settles into exotic stone fruit with a little air).

Oak is bit player with French and Hungarian hogsheads used for 18 months, none of them new. There’s ample flesh on the bone and the texture is a real highlight; very slinky indeed. If I was to be extremely critical, I’d like to see the tail wag a bit longer but the truth is the openers and middle order have pretty much done the job already.

After finishing this note I consumed the rest of this bottle with a lamb tagine. Quite a treat it was too.
