De Bortoli Rococo Blanc de Blancs NV

Yarra Valley 12.0% Diam $22

I’ve actually downed quite a few bottles of this affordable Australian Sparkling without taking any notes, but as this one was sent to me I’ll try to do the right thing by it. It is a really good wine and I’m happy to see the amount of worthwhile fizz produced in this country at around the twenty dollar mark increasing. It doesn’t seem too long ago that it was Brown Brothers NV or nothing.

14 months on lees has added yeasty autolysis characters and combined with malo it contributes to a soft, creamy mouth feel – no sharp edges here. The predominant flavours are of lemon biscuit and sliced green apple with subtle hints of sea shell and peach. It’s not an austere style but that just makes it easier to pour another glass and relax.

To be honest, you’re probably better off drinking it rather than reading about it.

Hi Jeremy, Brown Brothers NV is my regular entry-level sparkling choice, good to see another decent one to try at this price point. Any others you'd recommend at around the $20 mark? Thanks, Josh

Josh – I tasted quite a range of Sparklings together last week and will get some notes up in the near future. A couple more that are worth a look at around $20-

    Jansz NV and Rosé NV
    De Bortoli Rococo Rosé NV

The 2005 Yarra Burn Blanc de Blancs is ok (nothing more) at around $25. I'd be looking to step up to the Stefano Lubiana Brut NV or the Cloudy Bay Pelorus NV once you've hit that price point.

    cheers
