A perennial bargain in the dry Rosé stakes, the 2010 Yalumba Y Series Sangiovese Rosé deserves a great deal of credit. Most Rosés around its price point are nothing but garishly coloured lolly water catering to an audience that would probably be better off buying a vodka pre-mix.
Whilst this wine is in no way profound or complex, it does offer the sort of dry refreshment that is generally unavailable to consumers who only wish to spend $15 maximum on a bottle of Rosé. Aromas of cherry blossom, sweet and sour red fruits, marshmallow and tangy citrus translate well onto the palate. There’s no great length here but a gentle rasp of tannin adds interest and works to make the wine even more food friendly.
I’ve recommended past vintages of this to friends and it’s become a staple purchase for them. There’s a lesson here; don’t treat all wine consumers who aren’t obsessed enough to regularly spend premium dollars as lacking a discriminating palate. Yalumba have chosen a grape suitable for Rosé and haven’t dumbed it down for cellar door tourist sales. More power to them.
