I’ll start by saying that this vintage of Curly Flat’s Pinot Noir suffers from being sandwiched between two of the winery’s best releases ever; the 2004 and the 2006. Both of those wines will live for a very long time (although it’s hardly a chore to drink them now). The 2005, by way of contrast, is showing some significant signs of bottle aged development already.
Concentrated raspberry and cherry fruit, anise, mint, cedar, roasted coffee beans and a pinch of cinnamon rub up against forest floor, game and tomato paste. It’s above medium bodied with quite a bit of savoury, mulchy action in the mouth; the sweet fruit swells on the mid palate, building to decent intensity by the spicy, twiggy exit. It does wane on the finish.
I’ve two bottles of this left in my cellar and will probably try another in two years time and reassess from there – I’m not sure there’s great improvement left in it but I’d like to see where it goes from here, The acidity is still bright but the tannin has largely resolved, with just a fine rasp hanging on near the end. A nice wine, but there’s more to Curly Flat than this.

I just had a couple of bottles and am very pleased to have a few more, I thought it was sensational!
If it suffers by comparison to the 04 and 06, I am now hunting for some of those!!
If you can’t track down the 2004 or 2006 then the 2010 is worth a look Jason. Of course you might need to give it more time in the cellar.
