2010 Yalumba Y Series Riesling

South Australia 12.0% Screwcap $12.95

I couldn’t help but think of this wine as a “beginner’s Riesling”. It’s varietal enough, with citrus and florals playing a major part, but the bracing acidity is pretty much missing in action. It’s not replaced by soft acids, more a case of little emphasis on structure overall…which creates a broader drinking pleasure with a sense of sweetness and slight wishy washy-ness.

White flowers, baked green apples, sweet spice and lime with some wet slate, paw paw and honeydew melon. Forward on the palate and very much ready for drinking now. It’s not a wine that would score highly (if I scored wines) but it may well work as a gateway to the pleasures of the variety. At a guess, I’d say that’s pretty much the intent behind it.
