2009 Capital Wines Kyeema Reserve Merlot

Canberra 13.3% Screwcap $46

I’m happy to report that Capital Wines will become more available at a retail level in Queensland soon. I’m also happy to say that this new vintage of the Kyeema Reserve Merlot lives up to its predecessor; one of my favourite releases last year.

Briary red berries flash brightly over blackberry, with soft plummy depths you could get lost in. There’s a little mint and a suggestion of animal hide which I find extremely appealing. Quality oak contributes cedar/chocolate notes and an immaculate finish encompasses pepper, woody spices and hints of espresso. It’s reasonably sweet fruited on entry before brown leaves and black olives ease things in a more savoury direction. Fine lines of tannin stretch out and provide more than enough structure to suggest the wine will age very well.

It moves gracefully from Summer to Autumn in the mouth. Balanced, poised and down right delicious.

I like a bit of seasonal transition. Look forward to it being more readily available around the traps.

    Good stuff

Sure I saw some of the Backbencher or whatever it's called in Dan's on the weekend (Burleigh Waters). That's Capital wines isn't it? This sounds interesting.

Yep, the Backbencher is the entry level Capital Wines Merlot. I've got the 09 here to taste at some point.

I believe Dan Murphy's, after placing an order recently, are the main stockists in QLD. Unsure if they will have the Kyeema Reserve (which, judging from the 08s, really is worth stepping up to). I think Cru has some 08 left. 09 is marginally better IMO.

Cru had half a doz or so btls on the shelf when I visited at the weekend. That said, there may have been a WWEI-induced run on it since…
