2010 De Bortoli Gulf Station Pinot Noir

Yarra Valley 13.0% Screwcap $19

The number of quality Pinot Noirs available at or around the twenty dollar mark is growing but De Bortoli’s Gulf Station has an advantage in terms of availability. The 2010 is another bargain for those seeking authentic Pinot thrills (and spills) without a hefty price tag.

One of the things that impresses me about this wine is that is firmly in the savoury spectrum; forest floor and earthy elements anchor the fruit flavours. There is a lighter aspect to the wine in the form of wild strawberry flourishes but the main action centers around dark cherry cola and plum with beetroot playing a part on the periphery. Slightly sappy tannins are pleasantly assertive and, along with settled acidity, provide a serious framework to proceedings. The finish is good, with plenty of spice and a little polished oak.

It’s in medium bodied territory – there is enough weight and oomph to stand up to some lamb cutlets without any problems. All up, another impressive Gulf Station Pinot Noir.
