2010 Capital Wines "The Whip" Riesling

Canberra 11.2% Screwcap $18

Quite a different wine to the 2009 model, this release of “The Whip” caught me slightly off guard. Gone is the free spirited expressiveness of its predecessor and in its place is a very serious and tightly coiled Riesling that should age beautifully. Thankfully, the enticing florals remain.

Before going ahead with the note I should mention that this was made in extremely small quantities and should you wish to get your hands on some you may have to get in contact with Eurocentric Wines or Vine-Providore. The winery also has a small amount of stock left for private purchase.

Initially, the nose is all flowers and lime/lemon citrus but it does open up to reveal hints of apple flesh, tart passionfruit pulp and a bare suggestion of stone fruit. The palate follows suit, settling into a pleasantly prolonged sour and tart flavour profile which is extremely refreshing. The wine held up very well over three days of tasting and I suspect it has a very bright future ahead of it. I’d be trying to keep my hands off this for at least five years. It should truly blossom with time in the cellar.

Good luck getting hold of it. This note may be more for posterity’s sake and to emphasise that Capital Wines have a firm grip on the variety.
