2010 Wirra Wirra Scrubby Rise Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Viognier

Fleurieu Peninsula, McLaren Vale 12.5% Screwcap $16.50

It’s amazing the difference a little Viognier can make. Adds nobility. 15% more nobility than your average Sauvignon Semillon in this case. A number of my friends really like Sav Sem blends. I don’t mind them but they seldom hold much interest for me. Thus I’ve often pushed them towards this smart little number for selfish reasons. They’ve never seemed to mind.

The nose is Sauvignon dominant and a little pungent. Aromas of melon, unripe passionfruit and nettles sit atop lime citrus, cut grass and some wonderful fresh apricot. The influence of a very small amount of French oak is welcome, providing an enjoyable softer note to an otherwise sprightly palate. It all ends well with lingering tart fruits, a sprinkle of spice and a gentle phenolic twist.

You couldn’t ask for much more could you?
