2009 Wirra Wirra Scrubby Rise Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Petit Verdot

Fleurieu, McLaren Vale 14.5% $16.50

The last two vintages of what I know as the Wirra Wirra Scrubby Rise Red have taken my fancy. To be honest, generally when I use the word quaffer in relation to a wine, it’s not something I’m going to buy myself…but this is an exception. It’s often available for less than $15 too. Bargain-o-rama.

What’s is its secret? Well, it doesn’t come across as cynical. It’s a playful wine but what it lacks in complexity in makes up for in sheer ease of drinking. Gluggable is, I believe, the right term. Juicy choc-berry flavours with a little jamminess, some spice and coffee and only the most modest of tannins to stop it from sliding down.

It’s just a damn fun drink without an aspirational price tag. I tasted it, wrote my notes, then ordered a pizza and polished off most of the bottle.
