Viognier is a difficult mistress and this is Molly Morgan’s first dalliance with the variety. The intent was to make a rich and varietal expression. On the nose, there’s a fair bit of promise.
Aromas of creamed honey, tinned peaches and dried apricot along with vanilla bean, fresh ginger and earthy cumin. The mouth feel is suitably unctuous and I have no issue with that. The problem lies in the realms of structure and flow. A line of acidity does form a spine but the flavours seem to hit all at once, leaving a brassy and slightly hot, spicy finish with no real line or definition along the way.
The base materials are here though, it just needs a fair bit of work in coming vintages.
