2009 Moppity Vineyards Shiraz

Hilltops 13.9% Screwcap $22.99 Source: Sample

The Hilltops region is currently producing some seriously good vino at great prices. This is the next ‘step up’ from the 2009 Lock & Key Shiraz reviewed earlier, and it too, over delivers for the dollars. It’s co-fermented with 2% Viognier which adds pretty florals and textural nuance. No apricots though. There’s more depth in this one; more complexity, more intensity, more excitement and a little more oak.

‘I wanna live
with a cinnamon girl
I could be happy
the rest of my life
With a cinnamon girl.

A dreamer of pictures
I run in the night
You see us together,
chasing the moonlight,
My cinnamon girl’

Beautifully perfumed wine. Violets, black and blue berries and mocha on a bouquet which takes a little while to reveal its full presence – when it does, you just can’t stop smelling the heady aromas. It’s ripe and deep on the palate too but completely avoids excess. The French oak is almost totally swallowed up already, leaving chocolate and just a little graphite to join ginger, cinnamon and black pepper on a finish which loses none of its impact in the wake of the fruit that precedes it.

Supple, sexy and, well , just super stuff. I’m all over this wine.

‘Pa sent me money now
I’m gonna make it somehow
I need another chance
You see your baby loves to dance
Yeah…yeah…yeah’
