2009 Chapel Hill Gorge Block Chardonnay

McLaren Vale 13.0% Screwcap $25 Source: Sample

The Vale is not the first place that pops into my mind when I’m thinking about Chardonnay. If I was to try to imagine what sort of Chardonnay the region might produce I would be thinking ripe peaches, melons and butter…not really my cup of tea. This wine is NOTHING like that.

Aromatically it’s quite penetrative; lemons & zest, some pretty white flowers, hints of nectarine and white peach and a handful of grilled nuts. It delivers on the promise of the nose beautifully. The palate is slightly more layered with some lees derived bready notes, understated toasty oak and almonds. Spice is there on a long finish but it does not dominate. It’s driven by lively but not aggressive acidity but there’s plenty of textural nuance about the wine too. The inherent minerality is more apparent on the back palate.

It’s a top drink already but I would certainly be interested in tracking a few bottles over the next five years. The structure and balance suggests it will hold and it may even have a few more tricks up its sleeve yet. Impressive stuff.

I definitely don't associate Mclaren Vale with Chardonnay. I like wines like this that challenge perceived notions on region and variety

Totally agree. One thing's for sure – you're not going to see it happen as often in France ;)

ps- A Barossa Valley floor Riesling swept the trophies at the 2010 Barossa Show yesterday. I'm not one for shows, but I would still be keen to taste it…
