Grampians 14.5% Screwcap $25 Source: Sample
It’s been already been noted by many others, but considering its history and the quality of wine it produces, the Grampians lacks the profile and awareness it deserves. Fortunately, that seems to be changing – Best’s are running an interesting twitter campaign which I will be keen to watch play out tonight. I have to applaud the initiative. They’ve gotten their wines and the word out to the public very well and I sincerely hope it puts the region back in the spotlight.
The new release Best’s Bin1 Shiraz is certainly true to its place, possessing a fairly typical flavour profile. It’s rich with plums, cherries and redcurrants. Cool climate white pepper is abundant on the nose and palate with sweet violets, savoury chocolate & vanilla playing a considerable role as well. The tannins really elevate the wine, providing pleasurable grip along with excellent texture and form.
Alcohol and oak take a little while to fully integrate, so give it a decant. Ultimately though, it’s hard to deny the spirit of generosity on offer here.
