2009 Best’s Great Western Bin 1 Cabernet Sauvignon

Grampians 13.0% Screwcap $25 Source: Sample

Whilst Shiraz hogs all of the limelight in the region once known as Great Western, it’s far more than a one trick pony. On my last visit to Best’s charming cellar door I was very impressed with a 2005 ‘Old Vine’ Pinot Meunier (the vineyard which produces that wine was planted in 1868. Best’s are living vinous history). They’ve made a 2009, the only other time it has been produced in the last decade. But to the wine at hand…

I actually enjoyed the Bin 1 Cabernet more than the Bin 1 Shiraz from the 2009 vintage. It’s not necessarily a better wine, but I hadn’t had a Grampians Cabernet in a while and it was simply a lot of fun to drink. Wild, fresh blackberries overlie red fruits. There’s no cassis here and I value that. It’s one of the reasons I’m drawn to Yarra Cabernet too. Varietal leafiness accompanies a sprinkle of woody rosemary and hints of chestnut. The bouquet is floral, with pouch tobacco and some mint lift.

Medium bodied on the palate with linear cabernet tannin that is fully ripe. It’s not lithe nor is it fleshy; it seems comfortable and at ease with itself. The acidity is lively and I could understand some considering the wine a little thin. I didn’t have any such problem myself. It’s not the most detailed & defined Cabernet you’ll taste but it makes up for it with sheer peasant charm.
