2008 Mayford Shiraz

Alpine Valleys 14.0% Cork $36.99 Source: Sample

Proudly declares its home as Porepunkah on the label. That makes at least two people now ;) So how did I get a sample of this? Well, let’s say the Carlton Football Club had a decent year but didn’t make it too far in the finals, and leave it at that. This a stunning wine. Go and buy some. I doubt there is much made, so I wouldn’t even waste time reading my review.

Light on its feet, with fresh mulberry over cherry lit up by a heap of spice at the end. The structure is impeccable, with fine, sexy tannins and vital, integrated acids. Suggestions of char grilled steak work brilliantly on an almost subliminal level and the whole bunch action adds another layer to the tannin and aromatics. Brilliant stuff. Subtle rosemary too and a flicker of liquorice before leaving a hint of charcoal to linger. It’s only medium bodied but this baby just rolls…

If you wonder what someone means when they say a red wine has mineral-like qualities, just taste this. Seriously one of the best wines I have revelled in this year.

    Hi Jeremy

Not wishing to reduce your TNs into single paragraphs, but the last was sufficient for me to place an order of 3 from Mr D'Anna (along with a few sneaky Hoddle's Chardonnays – an 05, 06, 07). Feel free to put your commission claim in ;)

Keep up the good work – to me it is the quality of writing here and on other sites (I think we share some common ground as to those I'm alluding too!) that keep me awake at night pondering how I am going to afford all of this lovely wine out there in Australia.

    Cheers

    Thanks Stu, much appreciated.

Those sort of comments really help me to remember why I'm committed to the site. I hope you enjoy the Mayfords. I believe they will age very well too.

A few sneaky Hoddles Chardonnays are never enough :) Just bought some more myself (07, 09).

    Cheers
