2008 Golding Block 2 Chardonnay

Adelaide Hills 12.7% Screwcap $25 Source: Sample

More proof that Golding Wines have some special vineyards that are capable of producing fruit of spectacular quality. Grapes for this were whole bunch pressed to “gain clearer, more varietal fruit character”, then transferred to French oak barriques. Malolactic fermentation was halted at 20%.

Citrus, mandarin, white peach and green apple fruit flavours shine through brightly and are firmly at the heart of the wine. The oak plays a supporting role but it’s a good one, adding general nuttiness and restrained spice on the finish as well as contributing to a softer textural aspect which is especially appealing on the mid palate. There may be a little oatmeal here too.

It finishes on a crisp and slightly savoury note with good penetration and persistence. The lowish ABV is a positive as the wine does not belong in the ‘under done’ camp. All up, it’s captivating and very well priced. I’ll be attempting to procure some of this to enjoy now, and also, to see what it does over the next 5 years. I have high hopes.
