2008 Cardinham Estate Shiraz

Clare Valley 14.1% Screwcap $20 Source: Sample

I was tasting a big name 2008 Clare Valley Shiraz at a similar price point last night and it wasn’t a patch on this. It seemed sterile, forced and, well, rather average. This wine is anything but those things. It’s generous but within limits, has some slightly rough tannin that actually adds to its charms and a sweet oak encasing that works well with the fruit and is congruous with the the style.

Damson plums, black currants, pretty red berries & sweet vanillin lift from some American oak. Regional mint is present but not overwhelming. It’s not a fruit bomb; there is good shape and structure via well judged acidity and chewy tannin. Creamy on entry with lovely flow through the palate. It finishes on a mocha note with some warm brown spice too.

Very drinkable, very honest and very good value. Sometimes the smaller guys just do it better.
