2008 Cardinham Estate Cabernet Merlot

Clare Valley 13.9% Screwcap $20 Source: Sample

I’d had little success with reds from the 2008 vintage in the Clare Valley, then a box of Cardinham Estates showed up. The winery had pulled the plug on 2007 red wine releases (too close to “fruitcakes” apparently), so it’s good to see that integrity rewarded with some wines that offer lots of value and a bit of interest the following year.

This is 60/40 blend of Cabernet and Merlot. It’s the vinous equivalent of good comfort food. Jaunty acidity carries the flavours of blackcurrant, blueberry and plum with tannins playing a supporting role. It slides down pretty damn easily. Brambly edges to the fruit and some black olives raise the bar with oak derived choc/vanilla notes.

Juicy, fun and enjoyable. It will improve over the short term too. May even go longer than that. An impressive package for twenty bucks.
