2006 Golding Francis John Pinot Noir

Adelaide Hills 13.5% Screwcap $30 Source: Sample

In case you haven’t noticed, I have a few issues with Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir. Truth is though, this had heaps of character, tasted good and seduced me into consuming a couple more glasses than I had intended. It also went well with Maggie Beer’s  Porcini Mushroom & Verjuice Vegetable Pate…so it must have true Pinosity.

Ever so slightly dessicated dark cherries and some curious tangerine, but it’s the gaminess, charred fennel, animal hide and decaying leaf that captured my attention and eventually won my heart. Supple but with good structure and nice, strong tannin (for a pinot) closing out a finish of cloves and cinnamon with sauvage notes. Firmly medium bodied and with very good reach. Balances sweet, savoury and tangy flavours very well.

It’s idiosyncratic and a bit of a character, but if it still manages to make you want to drink more, those are good things. Yes, I reckon I rather like this one.
