2010 Four Winds Vineyard Alinga Riesling

Canberra 12.8% Screwcap $17 Source: Sample

I don’t have any information on the residual sugar in this wine but it tastes off-dry. The clone of Riesling in the vineyard is an American development of a German traditional clone from Geisenheim. I suspect Canberra (Murrumbateman, just north of Canberra actually) could be a good district for this style of wine. The variety seems to naturally produce more full fruited wines there whilst maintaining citrus characters and good acidity.

This one smells of  brown pears, citrus and paw paw pulling up just shy of lychees. Pear and melon enrich the mid-palate with some grapefruit and lime balancing the tropical sweetness quite well. Length is decent. Some of the most attractive traits are the light spice and candied orange peel that come in at the end.

I could see this working well with spicy dishes and it’s not hard to drink by itself either. The residual presents a bit too much like tinned pineapple for my tastes. Jaunty acidity cleans up the finish pretty well though. I don’t think it quite hits the mark, but I do sense potential.
