2010 De Bortoli Riesling Kabinett

Yarra Valley 12.0% Screwcap $21.60 Source: Retail

Sarah Fagan

Oh, to be a winemaker at De Bortoli! Steve & Leanne seem to encourage ceaseless innovation. Mind you, it looks like Sarah Fagan totally deserves the gig. My understanding is that this wine was the result of a German sojourn for the talented young oenologist and I like it a great deal.

An off-dry style that manages to avoid being overly sweet. In fact it’s just spot on as far as I’m concerned. Peach and other assorted stone fruit over lemon and grapefruit with minerally nuances on the nose…not quite river pebbles, so I’ll stick with that. Some ripe pear too. Gentle sweeetness with good focus and length within what I presume is an intentionally broader line. There is a touch of pithy grip and lightly grilled pineapple on the back palate. A hint of herbaceousness just makes it even more special.
